In cross country skiing, men compete over distances between 10 and 50km, women between 5 and 30km. There are also relay events and mass races where up to 20,000 people start. Some of these can cover distances up to 150km. A course should be equally divided into thirds between uphill, downhill and more varied, undulating terrain. Cross country is one of the most physically demanding sports in the world.
In the 1980s the sport was riven by the skating debate: races are now divided into classical, where skating is not allowed, and freestyle, in which all techniques can be used.
