How to rent snowboard equipment

General
The wrong equipment can ruin your holiday so it's worth doing a little research on where you decide to rent your kit.

Boot fitting and board width
The first items you will be assessed for are boots and the size of board you will need.

There are different width boards for different size feet, so ideally if you have very small or very big feet, make sure you go to a shop that can cater for this.

Your boots should feel snug and comfortable - your heel and toes should be in contact with the boot and your toenails cut. Good shops will usually have a narrower model and a wider model.

Rental boots also tend to have a memory foam liner that readjusts to each individual's foot.

The set-up
Your board should be set up to give you the most comfortable stance and direction.

You should be able to go back to the rental shop at any time to have your equipment adjusted.

Insurance
Don't forget to insure your rental equipment. Most shops will offer this service, if it isn't already covered in your travel insurance.

Still not sure? Consult our board doctor

Where
Chances are, if you look hard enough, you will find a good snowboard shop near enough to home so you can rent your kit before you leave. This can save time and hassle when you get to the resort.

But if you do decide to rent in resort, you will be able to sort out any problems there and then.

The board
Board Type
Rental shops tend to have limited choice. A decent shop should have at least two or three ranges including beginner and freeride/freestyle boards - all in different widths.

Board Length
If you are of average size and height, your board should come somewhere between your chin and nose. However, it is size, not height, that is of importance here, so if in doubt ask advice.

Bindings
If there is a choice, it will be between step-ins and strap-ins.

Step-ins are quick and easy to use, but confidence and security can be reduced, especially if you like to jump or do tricks.

Strap-ins are still the choice of the pros as they provide better support, response and versatility.

At the end of the day, it is personal preference.
