Lifts
Ski lifts are your key to the mountains. Climbing uphill is laborious
and time-consuming so the sooner you begin to use lifts, the more mileage
you can cover and the quicker you will learn.
At first, they can be intimidating
contraptions, but you will quickly master them.

Cable Cars
The first cable car was built in 1935 in Switzerland,
while cog railways (funiculars) date from the last century.
They provide
straightforward ways of getting up the mountain, though older installations
can be painfully slow.
No special techniques are needed, and those skilled
in urban rush-hour techniques should feel quite at home.

Other types of lifts
Outside the major resorts, you may encounter ancient and bizarre contraptions.
In Italy there are still strange cages that you have to pursue down a long platform.
In Eastern Europe you may be expected to bring your own grappling iron to clip
onto the drag wires.
If you must ski in exotic locations, be prepared for these delights - and
let someone else go first.
