The best way to do a substantial amount of off-piste skiing is to go heli-skiing. Canada is the favourite destination, although there is also heli-skiing in the United States, Italy and more exotic locations ranging from the Himalayas to the Caucasus.

Helicopters take groups of around 10 skiers with a guide, depositing them at the top of the chosen slopes and picking them up at the bottom. A typical day might consist of ten such runs, above the tree-line if the weather is good, otherwise amongst trees.

Groups usually stay in a luxurious mountain lodge and it is advisable to book with a group of friends who ski at your level. Heli-skiing can be the ultimate off-piste skiing; it can also be the ultimate out-of-wallet experience.
