Why Skis Turn

Non-carving Skis
Why does a ski turn? Most skiers quickly acquire the knack of turning by letting their skis skid across the snow. It feels very natural. The reason is that the ski has been designed with this in mind.

Your skis' tips are wider than their tails. As a result, when they are put onto their edges and skidded across the snow, there is more friction at the tips than at the tails. They therefore tend to turn.

The radius of this turn can be controlled either by steering with the feet and legs, which physically twists the ski, or by moving your weight forwards or back. The further forward, the more friction on the tips of your skis as they skid, and the faster they turn . Try it.

Carving Skis
Why does a carving ski turn? In a carved turn, your ski is bent into reverse camber.
The radius of the edge exactly matches that of the turn and the ski does not skid at all.
